History Curriculum Statement of Intent

History should be concerned with stimulating and promoting children’s interest and understanding of the past; the lives of people who lived in the past and how specific events have influenced our lives today and shaped modern society. Our world is everchanging and we aim to inspire in our children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, which will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We aim for the children to develop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding based on their historical heritage. We teach children to develop an understanding of events over time and in a chronological structure and develop the ability to communicate historical knowledge and understanding using a variety of techniques.
History teaching should enable children to develop the skills and confidence of enquiry. ie; to delve deeper, investigate, make connections, interpret, question, analyse, interpret and problem solve and ultimately improve and increase their understanding of history.
At Boreham Primary School our intention is to provide quality teaching and learning of history. We ensure progression of skills and knowledge and accurate coverage of the curriculum. The majority of children's History learning is taught during our Autumn term Discover topics. Based on the National Curriculum, key objectives and progressive skills are taught within topics in each year group. Children discover historical skills and knowledge through a key question approach to our planning and delivery.

Enable children to discover key historical knowledge
Develop children's empathy by learning from historical events
Enable children to interpret primary and secondary sources
Develop children's historical enquiry skills and research
Give children opportunities to communicate their learning in history dramatically, verbally and narratively
