Our Curriculum

At Boreham Primary School our vision is to create a primary school that encourages its children to explore, discover and dream. We want to help each child become a caring, confident and curious young person who has a passion for learning and achieving.

At Boreham Primary School our intention is that our curriculum extends opportunity, raises aspirations, opens children’s eyes to the world beyond their immediate environment, enables our children to live happy, healthy and productive lives which inspires them to want to learn more.

Our seven school values; friendship, respect, excellence, determination, courage, equality and inspiration aim to build resilience and encourage a positive mindset as it is often through mistakes we learn the most.

Curriculum By Topics

English Reading

It is our intent at Boreham Primary School to provide pupils with a high-quality education in English that will teach pupils to speak, read and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others effectively with enthusiasm and confidence. We believe that reading is an essential life skill which enables children to access the wider curriculum to its full potential while at school, and take full advantage of their life opportunities as they enter the adult world.  In our reading curriculum, it is therefore our intent to teach children to be able to read easily, fluently and with good understanding while developing children’s enjoyment of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information. To be able to do this effectively, Boreham Primary School implements a clear, consistent, whole school ‘Reading Cycle’ approach. Through our ‘Reading Cycle’ we aim for pupils to enrich their vocabulary through a range of texts, extracts and class books whilst developing the skills of an effective reader so that pupils can successfully comprehend texts.

English Writing

It is our intent at Boreham Primary School to provide pupils with a high-quality education in English that will teach pupils to speak, read and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others effectively with enthusiasm and confidence. In our writing curriculum, we intend to provide pupils with opportunities to analyse high-quality model texts, as well as practise genre specific writing skills before planning, drafting, editing, performing and evaluating their writing with increasing independence. To be able to do this effectively, Boreham Primary School implements a clear, consistent, whole school ‘Writing Cycle’ approach. Through our ‘Writing Cycle’ we aim for pupils to develop an awareness of the audience, purpose and context of each writing genre they learn about, through high-quality teaching that uses exciting stimuli for writing.  We ensure close links between reading and writing are made wherever possible and the use of specific, high-quality model texts are used to engage children and inspire them to become creative, fluent writers. Each writing unit aims to develop pupils’ increasingly wide knowledge of vocabulary and grammar and provide pupils with opportunities to perform and share their writing, including on our online learning platform ‘Seesaw’.

Mathematics

At Boreham Primary School, we recognise that mathematics is a fundamental life skill and we encourage children develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them throughout their lives. Therefore, as a school, we aim to provide the pupils with a mathematics curriculum, high quality teaching and use of effective resources so that we develop individuals who are numerate, inquisitive, and confident. At Boreham Primary School, maths is about exploring, mastering skills in counting and developing an understanding of number. It involves exploring shape and pattern, and measurement through activities which contextualise the skills and knowledge. Mathematics is about developing a curiosity in the world around us, and offering solutions to problems. It is also functional, aiming to develop skills which will enable greater independence as our learners grow.

Science

At Boreham Primary School it is our aim to develop children’s interest and curiosity about the world around them through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. We encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at school and beyond. This fosters in them a respect for the environment and provides opportunities to experience the awe and wonder of the natural world around us. Throughout the programme of study, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific skills.  The working scientifically skills are built on and developed throughout children’s time at school so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments, explaining concepts and continuing to ask questions and be curious about their surroundings.

Computing

At Boreham Primary School we understand that Computing and the use of technology is central to the education of all children. With technology playing such a significant role in society today, we ensure that all pupils are given the skills and knowledge that they must be taught if they are to be able to participate effectively and safely in the digital world. Pupils are introduced to a wide range of technology, including laptops, iPads and interactive whiteboards, allowing them to continually practice and build on the skills they learn through our curriculum. A high-quality computing education equips pupils for life and ensures they become digitally literate so that they are able to express themselves and develop their ideas through information and computer technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Learning Objectives
Physical Education

At Boreham Primary School it is our aim to ensure that all children lead happy, healthy and active lifestyles that contribute to a sense of achievement and wellbeing. We believe that PE in school has benefits that stretch far beyond the physical. Through sport children are able to overcome challenges, be inspired by others, develop positive relationships, have a positive body image, develop sportsmanship and teamwork and improve learning achievements and resilience. This is supported by our school’s values (based upon the Olympic and Paralympic values): respect, excellence, friendship, determination, courage, equality, inspiration. Through PE we also aim to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Boreham School is mindful of these requirements and teachers plan to include these principles across the PE curriculum as relevant to the age and stage of the pupils and appropriate curriculum content

Learning Objectives
Geography

We believe that Geography provides all children with the ability to delve deeper and make connections to find out about our world.  We aim to inspire in our children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will stay with them for the rest of their lives.  Our world is ever-changing and Geographical enquiry needs to reflect the dynamic nature of people and places, with exploration being based on ‘the real’ and relevant, wherever possible. Geography will help them learn about how people influence and interact with the physical and human environment. Our vision is that our pupils leave with an increased confidence and understanding of Geographical facts and vocabulary, as well as the skills to explore their world and become responsible and valued citizens in our society.

History

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” Marcus Garvey

History should be concerned with stimulating and promoting children’s interest and understanding of the past; the lives of people who lived in the past and how specific events have influenced our lives today and shaped modern society. Our world is ever-changing and we aim to inspire in our children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, which will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We aim for the children to develop a sense of identity and a cultural understanding based on their historical heritage. We teach children to develop an understanding of events over time and in a chronological structure and develop the ability to communicate historical knowledge and understanding using a variety of techniques. History teaching should enable children to develop the skills and confidence of enquiry. ie; to delve deeper, investigate, make connections, interpret, question, analyse, interpret and problem solve and ultimately improve and increase their understanding of history.

Religious Education

At Boreham Primary School, we believe that it is vital for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. Through Religious Education, pupils develop their knowledge of the world faiths, and their understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of other individuals, societies, communities and cultures. They learn to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and our behaviour, develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences.

Music

At Boreham Primary School we aim to make music an enjoyable learning experience for all children. We teach the children how to work with others to compose music and perform for an audience. We want children to feel safe exploring and performing music, making each individual a valued part of something bigger, through class work, school performances and wider experiences, developing their confidence as performers. Our intention for the children is to develop their acquired skills year on year with both ‘topic lead’ and discrete lessons. We aim for children to be able to recognise music as an outlet for self-expression, see its potential to use music as a tool to self-regulate, enabling them to identify feelings and moods and distinguish layers and textures in music and later recognise how these skills can be linked to our own wellbeing. As children develop their understanding of the factors that influence music we hope to foster in them a respect for music’s place in the arts and other cultures.

Modern Foreign Languages

We believe that understanding and being respectful of different cultures is an integral part of living in the world today. Our MFL curriculum is designed to create children who have the confidence to explore the world through language and communication. Learning a language promotes, encourages and instils a broader cultural understanding. As they progress, our linguists will have a range of opportunities to be able to work collaboratively demonstrating tolerance and respect for all, thus adhering to our schools values. Increased capability in the use of MFL promotes initiative, confidence and independent learning and encourages diversity within society.
